SERENA’S SONG

Serena’s Song was smaller than the average filly, yet she was the winner of 17 graded races, including 11 Grade 1 races.

She received many accolades and awards including: Kentucky-bred Three-Year-Old Filly (1995), Kentucky-bred Horse of the Year (1995), Kentucky-bred Handicap Mare (1996) and American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly (1995).

The success of Serena’s Song inspires us to remember that a champion cannot be determined by size and that talent prevails over gender.

“Serena’s Song was a very special filly. Running her against the boys in the Kentucky Derby in 1995 gave fans a marquee horse to cheer for and take interest in, and leading up to the first Saturday in May, she had already captured the hearts of thousands of racing fans. I was happy that she was able to go to Turfway Park to beat the boys in her final Derby prep race which was, at the time, the Jim Beam Stakes. It was a memorable win and put a spotlight on Turfway Park.” – D. Wayne Lukas

Turfway Park will always be proud of “our” little filly that defied the odds and beat the giants. Through the spirit of Serena’s Song, we will always be reminded that anything is possible when you combine your natural ability with a drive for excellence and a dream.
