Our Track Handicapper Mike Battaglia’s Picks of the Day

COMMENTS FOR FRIDAY JANUARY 21

1st

BEACH HOLIDAY ran poorly at Oaklawn but has posted two bullet works since returning to KY.  Look for him to rebound for Brad Cox with Corrales picking up the mount.  MONEY LENDER figures to be the main competition.  ASHWINS ORB just missed last out and rates a shot.

2nd

ESTILO PELIGROSO showed improvement in his first try over the Turfway Tapeta and gets the nod off of that effort.  ONE WAY HOME has been a consistent performer over all types of surfaces and looks dangerous in this spot.  CAPPY HOUR looked sharp winning last out.  A repeat of that one would be good enough to win again but he will contend with several other front runners tonight.

3rd

MAYAPRETTY figures to be in good position behind what should be a fast pace.  Give her the slight edge in a wide open race.  SOLAR KITTEN will be running late under the ageless Perry Ouzts (67) who is 6th on the all-time leading jockey list and had another amazing year in 2021 winning 100 races from has 592 mounts (17%).  WOKE UP TO ACES takes the big drop in her first race back after a long layoff.  Watch the board on this one.

4th

FIRST COUNT is the tepid choice in a fairly weak maiden race.  PRIVATE CONNIE drops in class for John Hancock and could wake up.  THISPOINTINTIME is a contender.

5th

MS TEMPTATION has shown big improvement since moving to the Tapeta and can win this one for Chip Brownfield with Luan Machado back aboard.  QUICK CONVERSATION didn’t beat much at Gulfstream.  That was her first race since June, and she will improve.  FOREIGN EXCHANGE is a definite threat.

6th

YA BEAUTY was the easiest kind of winner last out going a mile and a quarter and was still going strong on the gallop out.  She loves this track and should handle the extra distance tonight.   FIRST COURSE is proven at a mile and a half and beat the top pick on the Keeneland turf.  She figures to be the main competition.  STRAITOUTTAPOPCORN also loves it here.  She will be on the lead but is unproven at the distance.

7th

MALPAIS has won 8 of his last 9 races.  He has never run on a synthetic surface but should be able to make the transition and is capable of winning this tough allowance race.  KADRI was very sharp winning last out and figures to be a solid threat to the top pick.  SOUPER HIGHVOLTAGE has to be respected.

8th

ALITTLESLICEOF PIE rates the slight edge in another wide open race.  IRRESISTIBLE LADY needed her last race and should move forward in this one.  STILL CARRYING ON drops in class and has to be considered.

COMMENTS FOR SATURDAY JAN 22

1ST

UNDER THE COUVERS comes off of a game front running score and can make it two in a row in the opener.  JUNIIOR BUG drops back to his best level and should run well.

HARD NIGHT is a contender.

2nd

BOX OF JOE debuts for Brad Cox off of a series of solid works. He should be ready to go with Corrales named to ride.  UNDERDRESSED showed improvement in his first start over this track and figures to be the one to beat.  SEE SPOT RUN is a solid threat.

3rd

DRINK figures to be rallying off of what should be a fast pace and gets the nod in this bottom claimer.  CHA VEZ makes his third start back after a long layoff and will be tough to beat.  KEARNEY COUNTY rates a chance.

4th

LA BELLA NEGRA was second in his first race back after a seven month layoff.  He has the speed to be on or near the lead throughout and looks like a good bet to win this one for Rey Hernandez with Morales back aboard.  THE JUDGE AND JURY cuts back to six furlongs and posted a recent bullet work at the Training Center.  He has to be respected.  TIMEHASCOME debuts for Dale Romans and is bred to run well at first asking.

5th

GRANTHAM hooked an impressive winner in his debut at Churchill and was impressive when stretching out to get his maiden win over this track in Decamber.  He has had four solid works since that start and should get a good trip from the rail.  He rates the edge with Corrales back aboard for Mike Maker. ERASE was beaten by a couple of these same runners last out but he is capable of making the lead in here and could be tough to catch.  FRIAR LAURENCE is a perfect 2 for 2 and has looked good in both races.  He is a solid contender but has to overcome the 12 post in his first try around two turns.

6th

BURMESE is a 7 year old with just 3 career starts but gets the nod in a weak field of bottom maidens.  SWEET GINGER has the speed to be dangerous.  MINI DRESS is a contender.

7th

THUNDERING CREED is an improving 4 year old from the barn of Mike Tomlinson.  She comes off of a nice win over this track and can make it two in a row with Landeros picking up the mount.  FOUETTE figures to be on or near the lead throughout and is the one to catch.  GIRL NAMED PATSY has to be respected.

8th

NILE RIVER QUEEN and WESTERN SKIES are both debuting for Wes Ward and have very similar training patterns.  It’s very tough to separate the two but going with WESTERN SKIES who may be quicker from the gate.  HIDEKI moves up a notch in class after a runner up finish and looks best of the rest.
