Jimenez, Maker, Willowbrook-Carden Partnership Top Turfway Standings
FLORENCE, Ky. (Jan. 2, 2016) – Turfway Park closed out its 2015 holiday race meet Dec. 31 with repeats in the leading rider and leading trainer categories and a first-time leading owner.
Willowbrook Stables Ltd., the racing entity of David Nieman, and partner Jerry Carden topped the owner standings with three winners from eight starters over the 15-day meet. The two have campaigned horses together since 2014. Carden, of Indianapolis, and Nieman, from the Chicago area, have horses with trainer Kim Hammond, who holds the distinction of being racing’s all-time leading female trainer by wins with 2,073.
Six of Hammond’s wins came at Turfway during the just-finished holiday meet and she entered the final day of racing with a two-win lead, but perennial top trainer Mike Maker edged her at the wire with two wins on closing day. Maker finished the meet with 7 winners from 29 starters to earn his 7th holiday meet title and his 16th at Turfway overall since 2007.
With 23 wins from 101 mounts Albin Jimenez was the holiday meet’s leading rider, his fifth consecutive title at Turfway. Jimenez’s win total was nine better than his nearest competition, veteran rider Rodney Prescott.
While the holiday meet is now in the books, live racing continues uninterrupted at Turfway. The Northern Kentucky track opened its winter/spring meet on New Year’s Day. Live racing runs through April 3.
