Flint trainees one-two in Tejano Run
FLORENCE, KY . . . March 19, 2005 . . . Saturday was homecoming day for Discreet Hero, who won the $50,000 Tejano Run Stakes in his first start back at Turfway Park after two disappointing efforts at Oaklawn.

“He didn’t like the racetrack at Hot Springs,” said William Deakins, assistant to trainer Bernard Flint. “Bernie gave him one try, tried him back again, and sent him home. He came back home and found a track he likes.” Discreet Hero now has two wins and one third from three starts at Turfway. The win pushed his earnings over the half-million-dollar mark in 39 lifetime starts.

After finishing 7th and 10th in his two starts at Oaklawn, the latter in the Grade 3 Essex Handicap, Discreet Hero returned to the form that gave him an identical win in the Prairie Bayou Stakes at Turfway last December. Breaking on top in the 1 1/8-mile Tejano Run, he led all the way, turning back a bid by Paging at the top of the stretch. Paging kept second, 2 1/2 lengths back. Regal Reproach moved up along the rail to finish two lengths back in third.

Flint’s L.T.B., Inc. owns both Discreet Hero and Paging, the former in partnership with R. A. Williams and the latter with Miles Childers. “They both have speed,” said Deakins of the stablemates, “but Paging has shown he can come from behind, while this horse [Discreet Hero] likes to be on the lead. I’m sure Mr. Flint will be happy.” The coupled entry went off at 6-5 and paid $4.40 for the win.

“He was just ready,” said winning rider Justin Vitek. “They had him ready, and when they’re ready like that, they’re easy to ride. You put him where they can do something and that’s what happens. They wanted me on the lead or pretty close to it. I didn’t know who else would show speed but he got out there and relaxed so easy when he got out there alone.”

The winning time was 1:49.50 over a track rated sloppy. Completing the order of finish were Bonus Pack, Perfect Cut, and Thermostat.

Racing returns to Turfway Sunday at 1:10 p.m.
