FLORENCE, KY . . . February 10, 2005 . . . Three newcomers join nine familiar faces at Turfway Park Saturday for the $50,000 Likely Exchange Stakes, a one-mile race for fillies and mares four years old and up.

With $379,667 in earnings, more than twice her nearest rival, Golden Marlin goes for two Turfway stakes in a row; she won the Wishing Well Stakes here last month to halt almost a year of seconds. Usually going six to seven furlongs, she has no wins at a mile, but while the extra distance brings up a logical question, her closing effort in the Wishing Well may have answered it. Golden Marlin has three Turfway wins and has never been worse than second here. She has the meet’s leading rider, Dean Sarvis, and second-leading trainer, Greg Foley.

Foley also brings Miss Wellspring, never out of the money in six tries at Turfway. Her last win was two races ago, an off-the-pace and off-the-turf route in the mud at Churchill Downs in November. She looks for her first stakes win Saturday. Rodney Prescott rides.

With just seven races to her credit, four-year-old Plumlake Lady has spent nearly her entire career at Turfway. Her lone out-of-the-money finish came at Churchill Downs on the turf. She owns allowance wins at the distance, including a gate-to-wire win last out, and is stakes-placed at Turfway. Eddie Zuniga rides for trainer Martin Rouck.

Brand-new to Turfway are Beaucette, who spent the last year in California; U K Trick, an Oklahoma-bred in from New York; and Kristina’s Wish, who has been trying the turf from stakes to starters in the South and Southwest.

Trained by Neil Drysdale, Beaucette knows how to close and did so in her last win, a mid-level allowance race at Santa Anita last fall. James Lopez will ride. U K Trick’s resume ranges from a win among $50,000 claimers to a third place finish in the Grade 3 Next Move Handicap, both at Aqueduct. Justin Vitek rides for trainer David Fortner. Jeff Johnston will ride Kristina’s Wish in her Turfway debut, a big jump from the starter races in her recent past.

Also lining up for the Likely Exchange are Dick’s Chick (jockey Rodolfo Ignacio), usually on the turf but third in the My Charmer here in December; part-time turf runner Evil Eye Aly (Mathieu Adam); Tempus Fugit, trained by long-time Turfway leader Bernard Flint (Orlando Mojica); Mariaworth (Inosencio Diego), in her second start after a half-year layoff; Moonlit Romance (Chris Herrell), third behind Golden Marlin in the Wishing Well; and Slewpy’s Storm (Perry Ouzts), a year removed from her last win, the Valdale Stakes at Turfway.

First post Saturday is 1:10 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
