Bejarano has five on the night
FLORENCE, KY . . . September 10, 2004 . . . Jockey Rafael Bejarano has picked up where he left off at Turfway Park last winter, winning five races on Friday night’s 10-race card. In the first three days of the Fall Meet, the 22-year-old Peruvian has 11 wins, 5 seconds, and 1 third from 26 mounts.

Bejarano has dominated the Turfway Park jockey standings over the last three sessions. He won riding titles for the Fall and Holiday meets in 2003, winning a record 46 races in the latter, and the Winter/Spring Meet in 2004, when he won a record 150 races, 39 more than the previous record. He returned this month to Turfway after topping the Ellis Park standings with 85 wins, nearly twice as many as his nearest competitor. Earlier in 2004 he won the Churchill Downs spring riding title and was seventh in the spring standings at Keeneland.

Bejarano is the nation’s leading jockey by number of wins for 2004 with 347 from 1,385 mounts. He also has 273 seconds and 185 thirds on the year and ranks 10th in the nation in earnings, with nearly $7.8 million in purses won.

Among his five wins Friday was a dead-heat in the sixth race. Riding Commander Robin for trainer Richard Kohnhorst, he crossed the wire exactly even with Tony D’Amico aboard Obvious Vision. Commander Robin paid $4.60 for the shared victory. Bejarano also won the second race with Athena Girl ($3.80), the fourth race with Miz Lynne Kelly ($3.40), the seventh race with Princess of Ghosts ($3.40), and the ninth race with More Than Wild ($2.80).

More Than Wild is trained by Greg Foley, who has named Bejarano to ride his entry in Saturday’s $75,000 Weekend Delight Stakes, Golden Marlin. First post Saturday is 1:10 p.m. ET.
