FLORENCE, Ky., April 4, 2012 – The Horseplayers Association of North America (HANA) has ranked Turfway Park 6th among 68 racetracks in terms of value to players. The ranking is the third straight improvement for the Northern Kentucky track since HANA released its first scorecard in 2009. Turfway was ranked 15th that year, 11th for 2010, and 8th for 2011.
"We're very proud that our core customers, the horseplayers, rank Turfway so high based on hard data," said track president and CEO Robert N. Elliston. "They drive our business, and working to ensure they are satisfied, as far as we are able, is our highest priority."
One recent change to Turfway's profile is a reduction in takeout on Pick 4 wagers from 22 percent to 14 percent. The change took effect Jan. 1. Takeout is the amount the track retains from each wager for taxes, purses, and operating expenses.
HANA, a non-profit players' organization based in Charlottesville, Va., uses a complex algorithm to assign scores to multiple factors that create value for players, including the percentage of each wager retained by the track, size of wagering pools, variety of wagers, average field size, and availability of the track's signal to players not physically at the track. Each track is ranked by its composite score, and the data also can be sorted by individual factors.
