Dreamin Big Pays Big in Holiday Inaugural Stakes at Turfway

FLORENCE, Ky. (Dec. 7, 2013) – Dreamin Big paid off big in the $50,000 Holiday Inaugural Stakes at Turfway Park Saturday, coming seven wide from mid-pack to win by three lengths at odds greater than 17-1.  Lady Diva Ga Ga was second, a head better than Soft Whisper in third.

Final time for the six furlong sprint for fillies and mares three years old and up was 1:09.58.  Jon Court was up for the winning ride for trainer Mike Lauer and owner Penny Lauer.

In a Jif was in a hurry from the outset, hustled to the front from the outside post to set the pace in :21.35, :44.10, and :56.55 before ceding to the winner.  Dreamin Big raced in seventh as far as nine lengths off the lead before making her bid at the quarter pole and sweeping past just before the sixteenth pole.

“I looked at her form, and one of the previous riders said she’s a legit [mare],” said Court.  “Same with the trainer—he said, ‘We always do good together even though her odds are long.’  I just started riding her and she ended up running them down.  I had her toward the outside and kept her free and clear until it was time to go.”

Maude S completed the Superfecta.  Behind her were In a Jif, the 9-5 favorite Ire, Brown Eyes Blue, Elusive Act, Facey’s Spirit, Purely Hot, and Classy Zip.  Chortle, Fire Tricks, and Ms. Rhetta were scratched by their trainers.

Overlooked as the eighth choice in the field of 11, Dreaming Big paid $37.40 for the win, $15.60 to place, and $8 to show.

A multiple stakes winner, Dreamin Big is a 5-year-old daughter of Pure Prize out of the Roar mare Hush U Dreamer.  She was bred in Indiana by Mike and Penny Lauer and has been trained by Mike Lauer throughout her career.  Dreamin Big’s record stands now at 10-10-2 from 26 starts for earnings of $522,024, an impressive per-start average of $20,078.

Racing continues at Turfway on Sunday at 1:10 p.m.
