FLORENCE, Ky., Dec. 26, 2010 – Dr. Diamonds Prize enters the new year a stakes winner after taking the $50,000 Gowell Stakes by four lengths Sunday at Turfway Park. Golden Phoenix was second. Angelica Zapata was a head back in third and Musical Prodigy was another head back to complete the superfecta. Final time for the Gowell, six furlongs for two-year-old fillies, was 1:12.18.

Musical Prodigy was out first and clocked the first two quarters in :23.12 and :47.13, with Golden Phoenix second off her flank to the inside and Dr. Diamonds Prize just back in third to the outside. Musical Prodigy yielded to Dr. Diamonds Prize leaving the turn. Angelica Zapata raced two to three lengths off the leaders before catching Musical Prodigy late.

Jockey Jozbin Santana unholstered his crop for a couple of light taps in the stretch to encourage Dr. Diamonds Prize to switch leads, but she was never challenged once she cleared the field. "She's a little bit temperamental. She likes to be left alone," said winning trainer Mark Hubley.

Dr. Diamonds Prize had no previous starts at Turfway or on all-weather surfaces, but in four starts she had never been out of the money and Hubley thought she would run well. "I loved my post position [11]," he said. "She's a frontrunner, and speed horses have run well from the outside. It seems in general the track’s been better in the middle."

Completing the order of finish were Splendor Town, also trained by Hubley; Rein in Avaricity, the 8-5 favorite; Brushfirefairytale; Mai Tai Mama; Martha's Shadow; and Hare Prize. Bach Hamilton, Miss Sarah Brown, Rory's Dividend, and Somethinevenbetter scratched.

Sent off at nearly 12-1, Dr. Diamonds Prize returned $25.80 to win, $9.60 to place, and $5.60 to show.

Dr. Diamonds Prize now has two wins, one second, and two thirds in five career starts and has banked $67,106 for Lawrence Doyle's Katierich Stables and Christopher Connors. She is by Pure Prize out of the Clever Trick mare Miss Mary Apples.

In keeping with its holiday tradition, Turfway presents live racing every day this week through Sunday, Jan. 2. Post time is 1:10pm daily except Friday, when first post at 5:30pm kicks off the track's New Year’s Eve Track Bash.
