FLORENCE, KY, Dec. 4, 2010 – Paying attention paid off for the connections of 25-1 Perfect for You, who earned her first career stakes win in the $50,000 Holiday Inaugural Stakes at Turfway Park Saturday. Racing through the day’s continuous snowfall, the 4-year-old filly flew by the leaders in deep stretch and won the six furlong race for older fillies and mares by 1 1/2 lengths. Waccamaw, the 6-5 favorite, was second, half a length better than Minewander in third.
Late runners have done well the opening three days of the Holiday Meet, a fact that set the plan for Perfect for You. "I was aware of that," said winning jockey Fabio Arguello Jr., "and that was our strategy—just to be sure she broke good, got a chance to go to the outside, and make the run. I was a little worried about the speed, but once I was outside, she made a nice run."
Perfect for You broke from the rail and was almost eight lengths off the lead as Waccamaw ran the first quarter in a quick :21.69 and the second in :45.06. By the time Waccamaw hit the top of the stretch in :57:63, Perfect for You was on the move, running down the leader late to post the final time of 1:10.52.
Helen Belen completed the Superfecta, followed by Cauy's Humor, Pretty Slic Chick, Hungry Tigress, Diamond Song, Summer Flights, Zonga Zing, and Magnificent Mia. Irish Witch was scratched by her trainer. Lunar Mist and Mad Jazz did not draw in off the also-eligible list and also were scratched.
Perfect for You's performance rewarded bettors with $53.20 to win, $18.20 to place, and $13.40 to show and led a $13,328 Superfecta payoff.
Owned by G. Watts Humphrey Jr. and trained by George "Rusty" Arnold II, Perfect for You now has four wins, four seconds, and three thirds from 22 starts. The $29,140 winner's share of the Holiday Inaugural boosted her career earnings to $192,299. She is by Giant's Causeway out of the Deputy Minister mare Perfect Timing.
Racing continues Sunday at Turfway at 1:10pm.
