FLORENCE, KY . . . March 27, 2010 . . . Koolmen Racing Stable LLC's Orchestrator tracked the early pace and still had plenty left to hold off Age of Humor by a neck in the $125,000 Grade 3 Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park Saturday. Winning time for the mile was 1:38.29 over a fast all-weather track.
Breaking from post position seven with jockey Alex Solis aboard, Orchestrator settled into second as the heavy favorite Helen Belen led the field of three-year-old fillies through fractions of :24.42 and :47.68 for the first half mile. Orchestrator took the lead as Helen Belen faded around the turn for home, but her advantage was quickly challenged by Age of Humor and the two raced side by side through the stretch. Midway Holiday finished another 2 1/4 lengths back in third.
"She was very game today," said Solis. "She didn't want to get beat. I just wanted to make sure she stayed in front. She needed that last race (the China Doll Stakes, her first start since November). It made the difference today."
"She ran super," added winning trainer Ken McPeek. "Alex did a great job getting her out of the gate. She's been pretty flawless on the Poly(track) up to now. I'm not sure about the Kentucky Oaks. I'd prefer to run her on the synthetic somewhere."
Finishing fourth through ninth were Cactus Cadillac, Absinthe Minded, the 8-5 favorite Helen Belen, Allegation, Lisa's Kitten, and Cascading. Delitefully Wild was scratched by her trainer.
Orchestrator, a Kentucky bred Bernstein filly, improved her record to 8-3-2-0 and has now earned $159,096. She returned $16.60, $7.00 and $5.60 as the 7-1 fourth choice.
