FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FLORENCE, KY . . . February 7, 2009 . . . Unspoken Word got the lead early and easily and finished the same way, taking the $50,000 Likely Exchange Stakes by five lengths Saturday at Turfway Park. The five-year-old mare proved the bettors right, paying $3.00 as the 1-2 favorite.
Wellofaprize was second, a photo-finish neck ahead of Solarana in third.
"She was running really comfortable," said winning jockey Victor Lebron. "She's the kind of horse that you give her her head and she just goes along—very easy to ride. I let her pick her own spot. When we hit the quarter-pole I asked her a little bit and she gave me a nice little run. She feels a lot more comfortable if she gets the lead. When she gets it, her heart just grows."
Breaking from post three, Unspoken Word was never challenged. Silver Moonshine and Wellington Avenue ran with her around the first turn, but those two dropped back as Unspoken Word opened a five-length lead down the backstretch. Solarana made a move coming out of the final turn, but by then Lebron had asked Unspoken Word to go and the race was over.
Completing the order of finish were Indy’s Windy, Mrs Petoski, Bitter Lemon, Lauren's Tizzy, Lady Seattle, Silver Moonshine, and Wellington Avenue. Inny and Rinterval scratched.
Unspoken Word set fractions of :23.37, :46.77, and 1:12.59 before finishing the mile in 1:39.87.
Trained by Mike Maker for Rancho San Miguel and Twin Creeks Farm, Unspoken Word now has 6 wins, 6 seconds, and 3 thirds from 23 starts for career earnings of $$320,173.
The Likely Exchange was the third win on the day for Lebron and Maker, who respectively lead the jockey and trainer standings.
Racing continues Sunday at Turfway with first post at 1:10 p.m.
