FLORENCE, KY . . . March 29, 2008 . . . Princess Composer dictated every step of the $50,000 Fairway Fun Stakes at Turfway Park Saturday, completing her rise from $5,000 claimer to open stakes winner.
With Jose Camejo aboard, Princess Composer broke from the outside post in the field of nine and steadily angled over, taking the lead entering the first turn of the 1 1/16-mile race. Never more than half a length in front until the stretch, Camejo kept the brakes on as Princess Composer set the early pace at a comfortable :24.91 and :49.23. With half the field bunched around her, she was between horses coming into the stretch. Racing to her inside, Try to Remember headed her about a stride’s worth, but Camejo shook up Princess Composer and she easily pulled away to win by 1 1/2 lengths.
Delicate Dynamite raced in third through most of the race before getting up to take second. Try to Remember dropped back to finish third, another half length back. Final time was 1:45.51.
“She proves herself every time she runs,” said winning trainer Rebecca McGee. “She’s just game. She set a nice, steady, even pace. I told Jose to let her break and run on her own until he could settle her, because she wants to go to the lead and if he rushed her up he’d never get her back. I was really proud that she ran so good in this kind of company, and it’s great that we won at home.”
The fourth choice at 6.70-to-1, Princess Composer paid $15.40, $7.40, and $5.20.
Completing the order of finish were Promise Me a Prize, Fun Logic, the 8-5 favorite Sweetdownthelane, Demisemiquaver, La Perouse, and Tranquility. Rayona, Stop a Train, and Sweet Belle scratched.
Acting for owner Evelyn Escalona, McGee claimed Princess Composer for $5,000 in January 2007 out of her third career start. The six-year-old mare has won 14 of 21 career starts, with two seconds and three thirds. Her two out-of-the-money finishes were back-to-back fourths in her first two starts for McGee. She has one previous stakes win, Indiana Downs' Florence Henderson Stakes, which is restricted to Indiana-breds. Her career earnings stand at $147,355.
A daughter of Composer out of the Big Spruce mare Spruce Fir, Princess Composer made her first career start in December 2006 as a four-year-old, finishing third. She broke her maiden by eight lengths in January 2007 in her next start and over the course of that year raced 17 times, posting 11 wins. She is a perfect three for three so far in 2008.
Live racing continues Sunday at 1:10pm. Turfway is then open for simulcast racing on Monday, closed Tuesday, and open for live racing on Wednesday and Thursday, the last two days of the winter/spring race meeting.
