FLORENCE, KY . . . March 27, 2008 . . . The 36th renewal of the Fairway Fun Stakes, the final stakes race on Turfway Park’s winter calendar, has come up full and competitive. The 1 1/16-mile test this Saturday drew 12 older fillies and mares, most stakes winners or stakes-placed.
In her most recent start, La Perouse came from 15 lengths back to get her first stakes win, the one-mile Likely Exchange at Turfway last month. Victor Lebron will be back aboard Saturday for trainer D. M. "Speedy" Smithwick Jr.
A neck behind in the Likely Exchange was Fun Logic, who also won or placed in three California restricted stakes. She should find her place mid-pack before making her bid in the Fairway Fun. Trainer William Currin has again called on Rodney Prescott to ride.
Gabriel Saez won the Bourbonette Oaks (G3) aboard Maren's Meadow for trainer Larry Jones last Saturday and will ride Sweetdownthelane for Jones this Saturday in the Fairway Fun. Sweetdownthelane was most recently third, beaten just a length and a quarter, in the 1 1/16-mile Chou Croute Handicap at Fair Grounds last month. She has one race over Turfway's Polytrack, a fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Cup Distaff (G3) last fall.
Second in the Kentucky Cup Distaff was Delicate Dynamite, trained by Tom Amoss. Two starts back she was a well-beaten fifth in the Falls City Handicap (G2) behind such well-regarded foes as Kettleoneup, High Heels, and Panty Raid. The Fairway Fun will be her second start off a four-month layoff; the first found her seventh in the Harry Hensen Handicap at Sunland Park two weeks ago. Miguel Mena has the mount.
Princess Composer is a durable six-year-old who boasts 13 wins, two seconds, and three thirds in 20 lifetime starts. She started 17 times in 2007, won 11 of those races, and placed in four others, preferring but not requiring the early lead. She has won or placed in Indiana restricted stakes but has run primarily in starters and some claiming races. The Fairway Fun is a step up, but trainer Rebecca McGee will have her ready and she is six for nine at Turfway. Jose Camejo rides.
Also entered for the Fairway Fun are Tranquility (jockey Tom Pompell); Stop a Train (Brian Hernandez Jr.), most recently fifth in the G3 Stage Door Betty; Try to Remember (James Lopez); Promise Me a Prize (John McKee); Rayona (Rex Stokes III); Sweet Belle (Orlando Mojica); and Demisemiquaver (Jesus Castanon), making her second U.S. start after finishing second behind a runaway allowance winner two weeks ago.
First post Saturday is 1:10pm. Admission and parking are free.
