FLORENCE, KY . . . March 25, 2008 . . . Kids Voting Northern Kentucky cast its vote for Adriano in the Lane's End Stakes at Turfway Park March 22 and went home with the $10,000 top award from Charity Night at the Tables. Kids Voting Northern Kentucky is a non-partisan, all-volunteer organization that teaches young people the importance of voting and gives them an authentic voting experience at the polls.
Held annually at Turfway one week before the Lane's End Stakes, Charity Night at the Tables combines play-money casino gaming with community giving. Players designate their "winnings" to one or more of the charities selected to participate by the Northern Kentucky Leadership Foundation, which produces the event. In order of their winnings, each charity selects a horse running in the Lane's End Stakes. The charity whose horse finishes best among those chosen receives $10,000 for its work. The other participating charities receive $3,000 each.
Kids Voting Northern Kentucky chose Adriano, who not only finished best among those chosen by the charities but also best of the entire Lane's End Stakes field, winning decisively by 2 1/2 lengths.
In a note to the Northern Kentucky Leadership Foundation, Kids Voting Northern Kentucky Board of Directors member Carri Chandler wrote, "On behalf of a very grateful organization, thank you for your support of Charity Night at the Tables. We are a non-partisan local chapter of a national organization and have no paid staff—just a dedicated board-member mix of business professionals and educators. We're in our eighth year of providing civics curriculum to the schools and in November [will] hold mock elections for under-18 voters who come to the polls with their parents. Studies show this early engagement helps create lifelong voters.
"We were delighted just to be part of such an established event placing ourselves alongside such well respected charities. And you have our promise we will put this $10,000 to good use. Our organization is a lean operation; in my nine years of involvement, we've never had a balance of over $10,000 in our checking account!
"Again, we are incredibly grateful to [the Foundation] . . . and to Adriano!"
More than 1,000 people attended this year's Charity Night at the Tables. In addition to Kids Voting Northern Kentucky, the event proved a winner for The Point/Arc of Northern Kentucky, HealthPoint Family Care, Education Alliance of Northern Kentucky, New Perceptions Inc., Parish Kitchen, Senior Services of Northern Kentucky, and the Steinford Toy Foundation.
Longtime title sponsors for Charity Night at the Tables are Fifth Third Bank and The Yearlings. Heart Club level sponsorship for the 2008 event was provided by Sam's Club. Additional sponsorship at the Club level was provided by Home Improvement Solutions, Roeding Group, and the Scripps Howard Foundation.
