FLORENCE, KY . . . February 2, 2008 . . . The WEBN Stakes at Turfway Park Saturday was anybody's game until Big Glen swept boldly into and around the final turn. Under a hand ride by jockey James Lopez, the colt surged past the leaders with a furlong to go to win by 1 1/4 lengths.
Your Round closed fast and wide from near the back of the field to finish second. Mr. Harry stayed in for third, three-quarters of a length back, after setting the pace to the final furlong of the one-mile race.
Mr. Harry broke first and took the lead as expected, setting fractions of :24.14, :47.83, and 1:12.62 while pushed by Gregory’s Trick and U. S. Cavalry. Breaking from the far outside post, Big Glen angled over approaching the first turn, though not quite as far as Lopez intended.
"I was about mid-pack coming around the first turn, and I was a little worried because we were so wide," said Lopez. "But down the backside he jumped in the bit and got me in a really good spot about the half-mile pole. Then he did it again at the three-eighths pole, and he just kicked on from there. I just had so much horse."
The WEBN was the first stakes win for Lopez since he returned to riding late last summer after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus.
Final time for the WEBN was 1:38.48. Big Glen returned $14.80, $7.20, and $4.40 for his work as the 6-1 fifth choice in the field of 10.
Completing the order of finish were the 2-1 favorite U. S. Cavalry, Texas Fever, Dixie Decision, Hot Chili, Gregory’s Trick, Socks, and Cape Hatteras. Targe was an early scratch. Best Buddy and Laramie Woods were late scratches.
Big Glen is owned by John T. L. Jones and Bill Jones and trained by Frank Brothers. He now has three wins from five starts and career earnings of $59,391. The $50,000 WEBN was his first stakes attempt and his second consecutive win. All three of his victories have come on Turfway’s Polytrack.
The WEBN is the second local prep race for the Lane's End Stakes, scheduled for March 22. The third prep, the 1 1/16-mile John A. Battaglia Memorial Stakes, will run March 1.
Live racing continues Sunday at Turfway, with first post at 12:00 noon.
