FLORENCE, KY . . . September 6, 2007 . . . Gouldings Green returns to Turfway Park Saturday to defend his 2006 win in the $100,000 Turfway Park Fall Championship (G3), a one-mile event for horses three years old and up and the first stakes race of the Fall Meet.
As he did in 2006, Gouldings Green enters this year's Fall Championship off a win in the Seagram Cup (G3) at Woodbine. He will try to duplicate his back-to-back winning efforts for trainer Tony Reinstedler and new rider Jesus Castanon. The six-year-old horse, a son of Charismatic, has nine wins from 19 starts, including two wins in five starts on Polytrack.
Making his first start at Turfway and his first against older horses is Teuflesberg, a Kentucky Derby hopeful this year who finished a disappointing 17th after a promising prep season. The lone three-year-old in the eight-horse field, he has led early and closed late in his busy 20-race career. Trainer Jamie Sanders has pursued an aggressive graded stakes schedule for the Johannesburg colt, who came back from his Derby loss to win the Grade II Woody Stephens at Belmont. Teuflesberg most recently was fourth behind the Grade I Kings Bishop trifecta of Hard Spun, First Defence, and E Z Warrior. Robby Albarado was aboard for both of those efforts and will ride again Saturday.
The Fall Championship has also drawn Spotsgone, Desert Wheat, and Istan, all coming in off impressive wins in ungraded stakes races. Completing the field are High Blues, Barbican, and Cielo Gold, a talented colt who is making his first start since winning the Grade II Indiana Derby nearly a year ago.
The Turfway Park Fall Championship is the ninth of 10 races on Turfway's Saturday card. First post is 1:10 pm ET. Admission and parking are free.
