FLORENCE, KY . . . March 28, 2007 . . . When Hard Spun crossed the finish line first in the Lane's End Stakes at Turfway Park Saturday, the Parish Kitchen of Covington, Ky., won the best bet of all, adding $10,000 to its coffers thanks to Charity Night at the Tables.

Held each year at Turfway one week before the Lane's End Stakes, Charity Night at the Tables is a glamorous evening of casino gaming for play money. Players designate their winnings to one or more of the charities selected to participate by the Northern Kentucky Leadership Foundation, which produces the event. Based on its winnings, each charity in turn selects a horse running in the Lane's End Stakes. The charity whose horse finishes first among those chosen receives $10,000 for its work. The other participating charities receive $3,000 each.

The Parish Kitchen chose Hard Spun, who won the Lane's End Stakes to pay off big for the organization. Located on Pike Street in Covington, the Parish Kitchen offers a free daily meal to anyone who comes to their door. The ministry has three full-time and two part-time staffers and about 300 volunteers.

Molly Navin, director of the Parish Kitchen, said, "For nearly 33 years the Parish Kitchen has depended on private donations from individuals, organizations and businesses in our community to provide nourishment and nurturing to those disenfranchised by poverty, disabilities and loneliness. Five words describe what we do: dignity, respect, attention, affection and hospitality. It is our privilege to live out this mission, this calling from the Gospel.

"It takes the concern and commitment of many to accomplish this. In the last three years the number of meals served has increased by approximately 13,000. We can assure you that your very generous contribution of $10,000 makes a significant impact and will enable us to continue our mission."

This year eight charities participated in Charity Night at the Tables. In addition to the Parish Kitchen, the event proved a winner for Dress for Success Cincinnati, HealthPoint Family Care, Interfaith Hospitality Network of Northern Kentucky, Kentucky 4-H Foundation, New Hope Family Life Center, Senior Services of Northern Kentucky, and Steinford Toy Foundation.

Charity Night at the Tables is sponsored by Fifth Third Bank, The Yearlings, and the Scripps Howard Foundation, with additional sponsorship provided by Sam's Club, Intrinizic Marketing and Design, and National City Bank.
