$10,000 to be given away September 17
FLORENCE, KY . . . August 30, 2005 . . . Turfway Park has joined with the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association (KTA) to give away $10,000 in college scholarships for the 2005-2006 school year. Turfway’s College Scholarship Day is scheduled for September 17, coinciding with the track’s biggest day of racing in the fall meet, the Kentucky Cup Day of Champions.

Ten $1,000 scholarships will be given away by random drawing and are available to any student enrolled full-time at an accredited college or graduate school during the 2005 fall semester. A winner will be announced after each of Turfway’s 10 live races beginning with Race 1, scheduled to go off at 1:10 p.m. Eastern time. Students may enter the drawing from noon until 7:00 p.m.; the earlier they enter, the more chances they have to win. To enter, students must show a valid, current college ID showing full-time status, and they must be present both to enter and to win.

All students are eligible for the first nine drawings. The 10th drawing will be limited to students who are affiliated with the Thoroughbred industry or whose parent or guardian is affiliated with the industry. Such affiliation includes but is not limited to farm, track, and backside employees and jockeys, exercise riders, grooms, and other independent contractors working in the industry.

“We are proud to participate with the KTA to award these scholarships and excited about helping students from our area and from our industry continue their education,” said Robert N. Elliston, president of Turfway Park. “We look forward to welcoming the students to Turfway for our first College Scholarship Day.”

The Kentucky Thoroughbred Association was formed in 1983 by a group of Kentucky horsemen to address problems within the Thoroughbred industry, represent the industry nationally, and maintain high standards of racing, breeding, and training. By the end of September 2005, the KTA and participating Kentucky racetracks will have awarded $170,000 in scholarships since the program began in 2000. Turfway Park’s College Scholarship Day on September 17 will mark the first time the Northern Kentucky track has participated in the program.
