Contessa surprises Charity Night beneficiaries
FLORENCE, KY . . . March 24, 2005 . . . Post positions for Saturday’s Lane’s End Stakes were drawn Thursday at Turfway Park’s annual Call to the Post luncheon, with Mike Battaglia setting morning line odds that testify to the competitiveness of the nine-horse field. Lining up will be:

1. Diamond Isle (jockey Dean Sarvis) 15-1
2. Magna Graduate (Jerry Bailey) 3-1
3. Wild Desert (Robby Albarado) 6-1
4. Andromeda’s Hero (Rafael Bejarano) 5-1
5. Flower Alley (Jorge Chavez) 8-1
6. Texcess (Rene Douglas) 6-1
7. Mayan King (Joe Bravo) 15-1
8. Spanish Chestnut (Gary Stevens) 5-2
9. Mr Sword (Norberto Arroyo, Jr.) 15-1

The six Northern Kentucky charities that participated in Charity Night at the Tables last Saturday made their choices as well. The charity whose horse finishes first (or best among those chosen) in the Lane’s End Stakes will receive $10,000 from Charity Night sponsors Fifth Third Bank and The Yearlings. The other five charities will receive $2,000 each. The Steinford Toy Foundation had first choice; the choices of all six charities are:

1. Steinford Toy Foundation—Spanish Chestnut
2. Family Nurturing Center—Magna Graduate
3. Parish Kitchen—Andromeda’s Hero
4. Children’s Home of Northern Kentucky—Mayan King
5. St. Vincent de Paul Pharmacy—Flower Alley
6. Wildlife Conservation Kentucky—Diamond Isle

Mayan King’s connections surprise Children’s Home with offer
Speaking for the connections of Mayan King, trainer Gary Contessa surprised and delighted the Call to the Post crowd by spontaneously offering an additional $10,000 to the Children’s Home of Northern Kentucky should Mayan King finish first, second, or third in the Lane’s End Stakes.
