FLORENCE, KY . . . January 12, 2005 . . . Jockey Dean Sarvis, leading rider for Turfway Park’s 2004 Holiday Meet and currently leading its 2005 Winter/Spring Meet, brought home five winners at the track on Wednesday. The hot streak included three wins in a row and brought his total for the first eight days of the meet to 15 wins, 6 seconds, and 5 thirds from 53 mounts. The jockey had eight mounts on Wednesday’s nine-race card.
The five-win feat was a textbook example of how to read a track. The Turfway track has been kind to runners coming wide the past few weeks, and Wednesday’s muddy track was no different.
Sarvis won the second race aboard My Date. Off at 5-1, the mare pressed the lead early and went on to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Sarvis’ next win came in the fourth race on Jenny Tudor, a 10-1 shot who came from off the pace to win by a length late in the final furlong.
Sarvis then reeled off consecutive wins in the sixth, seventh, and eighth races. In the sixth, Judy’s Choice was second favorite at 8-5 but first by half a length after pressing the pace from the outset. In the seventh, Sarvis kept 5-2 favorite Padlock in mid-pack until the turn, when he angled out, took the lead, and went on to win by 1 1/4 lengths. In the eighth, the 7-5 favorite Deputy Director stayed close until coming three wide on the turn and running down the leader to win by a head.
Sarvis has been named on six mounts on Thursday’s nine-race card. First post is 5:30 p.m. ET.
