FLORENCE, KY . . . December 3, 2004 . . . Jockey Dean Sarvis reached the 1,000-win milestone tonight with a victory in Turfway Park’s eighth race. His mount for the memorable win was Mr Mag, who closed on the leaders in the stretch and was a neck in front when it counted. The win paid $17.80.
The 36-year-old Sarvis came in tonight just one win shy of the mark. As he accepted congratulations from friends, fans, and peers, he said, “It’s a big milestone. I’m glad to reach it. I wasn’t really thinking about it. I knew it was there. I knew it would come eventually. [My horse] was back and he closed well from between horses. He got bumped a little bit down the lane, and he just dug in. He ran a really game race.”
The win was the first of two in a row for Sarvis on the 12-race Friday night card. In the ninth race, he led all the way on 12-1 Liberty Bellah to claim a two-length victory. After four days of the 24-day Holiday Meet, he has 7 wins, 4 seconds, and 3 thirds, putting him second in the standings behind Ramsey Zimmerman.
Sarvis won both of River Downs’ meets this summer and set a record for number of wins in a season at the Ohio track with 167. Among his 14 career stakes wins are five at Turfway, including this year’s Grade III Turfway Park Fall Championship aboard Cappuchino. His third career graded stakes win, the Fall Championship was one of 21 victories for Sarvis during the Turfway Fall Meet, enough to clinch fourth place in the meet standings.
In the Holiday Inaugural Stakes at Turfway on Saturday, Sarvis has the call on the morning line favorite, Golden Marlin.
Sarvis plans to ride at Turfway through the current Holiday Meet and the upcoming Winter/Spring Meet; the meets run back-to-back through April 7.
