FLORENCE, KY . . . September 9, 2004 . . . Eight ladies will line up at Turfway Park this Saturday in the $75,000 Weekend Delight Stakes, a six-furlong contest for three-and-up fillies and mares that opens the track’s schedule of fall stakes races.
Put Me In certainly looks to be in for this one. With three of her four wins this year coming in stakes company, she has the strongest stakes experience in the field, and was a strong second to Lady Tak in the Winning Colors Handicap at Churchill Downs this spring. Her most recent race ended in the winner’s circle at the West Virginia Secretary of State Handicap at Mountaineer. This time out she’ll be ridden by Mark Guidry, who plans to ride the Turfway Fall Meet and was two-for-two on opening night. Merrill Scherer trains the four-year-old Put Me In.
Four-year-old Golden Marlin gave trainer Greg Foley a steady flow of show money this spring and summer at Churchill Downs, with three third-place allowance finishes bracketing her one win on the year. The filly has finished out of the money just once this year, a fourth place effort in the Ellis Park Breeders’ Cup last month. She is two for four at Turfway with two seconds, and returns off a bullet work at Churchill less than a week ago. Rafael Bejarano, the nation’s leading rider by wins, is back aboard.
Those two may be vying for the most comfortable stalking position behind the early speed of That’s Our Tricky, who has been beaten by both before, and Moonlit Romance, who makes a big leap from low-level allowance company to try the Weekend Delight. Star of Atticus likes the lead, too, when she can get it, though she hasn’t been there her last couple of efforts.
There Runs Hattie has been off a couple of months but put in a strong workout Wednesday and may be ready to continue the improvement she was showing before the layoff. She finished third, just behind Mayo on the Side, in the HBPA Handicap at Ellis Park in July before taking the time off. Larry Melancon has the call for trainer William Huffman.
The complete field in order of post position, with jockeys and weights: Moonlit Romance (Chris Herrell, 116); Golden Marlin (Bejarano, 119); There Runs Hattie (Melancon, 119); That’s Our Tricky (Calvin Borel, 116); Literary Light (John McKee, 116); Feather Maraine (Dean Sarvis, 116); Put Me In (Guidry, 122); and Star of Atticus (Willie Martinez, 119).
First post at Turfway Park on Saturday is 1:10 p.m. The Weekend Delight is the ninth of 10 races on the card. Admission and parking are free.
