FLORENCE, KY . . . March 17, 2004 . . . Kathy Walsh will run Hippocrates without blinkers again in the Lane’s End Stakes (G2) this Saturday at Turfway Park. Commenting on her decision to remove them before his last race, which he won by four lengths, she said, “It changed a lot. He had a lot of trouble his race before that.” After one race in Ireland at two, Hippocrates was returned to the United States. “His first race here [in the U.S.], he didn’t get out of the gate,” Walsh said. “He was just a young colt, slow to mature. We’re just trying to figure out where we stand with him. The timing of this race worked out well for him.” David Flores will have the mount on Hippocrates.
Stolen Time had his final workout at Payson Park for trainer Bill Mott Wednesday, breezing four furlongs in :49.80, the second of 13 at the distance.
New Element arrived at Turfway Monday from Fair Grounds and is settling into his new surroundings. The Turfway track was closed for training Monday due to snow, limiting New Element to a walk around the shedrow. Trainer Ronny Werner said he knows he’s asking a lot of the horse. “I know he will probably be a long shot on Saturday, but the way I see it, that’s the only way you can find out how talented your horse is, by challenging him against top company.”
Trainer John Toscano Jr. all but confirmed that Sinister G will run in the Lane’s End Stakes. “We’re shipping in from New York with George Weaver’s filly [Fond, set for the Bourbonette Breeders’ Cup] on Thursday and are leaning heavily to running in the Lane’s End.”
Little Matth Man continues to train well for Martin Ciresa, who is excited about the prospect of a rematch with Silver Minister. “We are going to follow the same plan as we did for the Battaglia [Memorial Stakes, February 28, when Little Matth Man finished second to Silver Minister]. He will have a final training session Thursday morning at Philadelphia Park, then he will get his morning meal, and when he gets ready to lay down, we will load him up and hit the road. On Friday he will just walk the shedrow and Saturday should be no problem. He loves to travel.”
First post on Lane’s End Stakes Day is 12:30 p.m. The Lane’s End Stakes is the 8th race on the 12-race card.
