FLORENCE, KY . . . January 31, 2004 . . . Turfway Park’s cancellation of live racing on Saturday, January 31, has prompted racing officials to reschedule the $50,000 WEBN Stakes, the 10th race on the cancelled card. The WEBN will be run next Saturday, February 7. Nominations will be retaken for the rescheduled WEBN and will close Wednesday, February 4, with entries drawn the following day, Thursday, February 5.
The Likely Exchange Stakes, already scheduled for February 7, also will be run that day as planned.
The cancellation Saturday is the second consecutive full-card cancellation and the third since the Winter/Spring Meet began January 1. Live racing was cancelled Friday, January 30, and Sunday, January 25, and was halted after three races on Thursday, January 22. Saturday’s cancellation was due again to extreme cold. Despite sunny skies the temperature remained near zero an hour before scheduled post time and the high was forecast to be only 18 degrees.
According to Racing Secretary Richard Leigh, Turfway will run 12 races on Fridays beginning February 6, two more than usual, and/or will bring back the missed races as extras.
The track continues its regular simulcast schedule.
Live racing is expected to resume Sunday, February 1. Post time that day, Super Bowl Sunday, is noon EST.
