FLORENCE, KY . . . December 4, 2003 . . . Drizzle notwithstanding, jockey Rafael Bejarano won four of Turfway Park’s nine races tonight and finished second in two others.
After back-to-back seconds in the first and second races, the latter just a nose behind the winner, Bejarano brought home Reflection Bay in the third race for his first win on the night. The winner, off at 2-1 and just a head in front at the wire, paid $6.40, $4.00, and $2.80 in the 6 1/2-furlong claiming race for fillies and mares. The purse was $8,200.
Bejarano won the fourth race as well, an $11,000 mile claiming run, with the 9-5 favorite, Accordian Man. The horse won by 6 1/2 lengths and paid $5.80, $4.60, and $2.60.
A change of colors and Bejarano was back aboard his next winner on the night, Silver Minister. The two-year-old, trained by Greg Foley, was the 1-2 favorite in the 6-furlong, $23,900 maiden special weight. He won the fifth race by 1 1/4 lengths and paid $3.00, $2.80, and $2.60.
Bejarano’s fourth and final win came in race 7 aboard Lucky Baldwin, the 7-2 second choice. Winner by a neck, the horse paid $9.80, $5.40, and $3.80 for his work in the 5-furlong, $19,000 claiming race.
The night’s effort gives Bejarano seven winners from 28 mounts in the first three days of Turfway’s Holiday Meet. The meet runs through December 31. Post time is 5:30 p.m. EST Wednesday through Friday and 1:10 p.m. EST Saturdays and Sundays. Post time December 26 through December 31 is 1:10 p.m.
Bejarano returned to Turfway for the Holiday Meet after riding 21 winners from 194 mounts at Churchill Downs’ Fall Meet, fifth in the standings. He won the Fall Meet riding title at Turfway Park with 27 wins from 97 mounts.
