FLORENCE, KY . . . December 26, 2005 . . . Long shot Seen Dancing swung wide and drove steadily up the middle of the track to win the $50,000 Gowell Stakes at Turfway Park Monday. Her late run caught the leader with less than half a furlong to go and rewarded bettors with a $61.20 payoff. The Gowell, a six-furlong contest for two-year-old fillies, gives Seen Dancing her third win in six career starts and her first stakes win.
“She was next to last going down the backside and started making a move about the half-mile pole,” said Gary Borgemenke, assistant to trainer Bernard Flint. “By the time they reached the quarter pole she was about eight or nine wide, and she came running down the lane. Usually this filly runs long—a mile, a mile and a sixteenth—and she usually goes to the front when she runs long, but she’s versatile; she broke her maiden going short. This race had a bunch of speed in there, and speed hasn’t been holding up here, so I guess it set up perfect for her.”
A slight bobble out of post 11 might have kept Seen Dancing from joining Mighty Martha, Exclusive Wildcat, and High Heritage in the race for the early lead. Mighty Martha, the 4-5 favorite, got the best of that early contest and held the advantage nearly to the end, but Seen Dancing’s late run left her second by half a length. Unbridled Tale moved up from mid-pack to finish another 1 3/4 lengths back in third.
Owned by Dan White and ridden by Rodney Prescott, Seen Dancing finished the Gowell in 1:13.60.
Completing the order of finish were Summer Cyclone, Holiday Charm, Slewpy’s Star, Exclusive Wildcat, Spotless Mind, Fiji Island, and High Heritage. Taylor Madison and Champagne N Glory scratched.
Keeping to its traditional holiday schedule, Turfway presents live racing at 1:10 p.m. every day through Monday, January 2.
