Turfway to hold memorial service for jockey Herrell

FLORENCE, KY . . . November 25, 2005 . . . Turfway Park will hold a memorial service for jockey James “Chris” Herrell at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 27, opening day of the track’s Holiday Meet. The service will take place in the paddock and is open to the public.

Herrell, 31, died November 12 after collapsing in his Louisville apartment, where he had just finished eating lunch with his fiancée, Christin Landrum. The cause of death is pending.

Herrell rode primarily in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky and was a regular at Turfway Park. Riding from 1991 to 1994, from 1999 to 2001, and from 2003 until his death, he accumulated 351 career wins from 3,612 mounts, according to records maintained at equineline.com. He had recently returned to riding after breaking his collarbone in a riding accident at River Downs on August 21.
