FLORENCE, KY . . . September 18, 2003 . . . Looking to sharpen Private Horde for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita October 25, trainer Joe Cain will bring the 4-year-old colt to Turfway Park Saturday, September 20, for the 18th running of the $75,000 Marfa Stakes. Private Horde’s most recent score came on August 10 in the Saratoga slop when he ignored bettors’ best guesses and put five lengths between himself and second place to upset the Grade II Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap.
It’s been a good year for Private Horde. After just one win in nine starts in 2002, he already has five wins in seven starts this year, three of them stakes victories. He’s familiar with Turfway, having won three of seven starts here during his career. Terry Thompson has the ride Saturday.
Lining up next to Private Horde in mid-pack is Deer Lake. The 4-year-old comes into the Marfa off a third-place finish in the Arlington Sprint on August 23, his second stakes start. Deer Lake has raced just a dozen times in three years, but trainer Paul McGee knows where to put him; the colt has won half his starts, finished off the board just twice, and has never been worse than fourth. He has two firsts and one third in four starts this year. Riding Deer Lake will be Dean Butler, who has hit the board with 22 of his 57 mounts and is second among jockeys by number of wins during Turfway’s Fall Meet so far.
D. Wayne Lukas’ Shah Jehan returns to sprint distance after a fourth-place foray into the one-mile Governor’s Handicap at Ellis Park last month. Lining up in 8th position is City Rapid, who’s been successful this year on the Kentucky circuit among good allowance company sprinters.
Also among the Marfa’s nine-horse field are Bananas; Still Be Smokin’; Requesto; Paging; and Exile Lark.
First post at Turfway Park on Saturday is 1:10 p.m. The Marfa Stakes, run over 6.5 furlongs, is the 13th race on the 16-race card, which includes simulcasting from all-turf Kentucky Downs.
