New generation of fans the goal
FLORENCE, KY . . . August 29, 2003 . . . In a bid to draw a new generation of fans to America’s oldest sport, Turfway Park is set to open Corona Cantina, Northern Kentucky’s newest hotspot, on September 3. The debut of the Mexican beach-themed nightspot coincides with the return of live Thoroughbred racing to Turfway.

“A lot of today’s race fans first came to the track as kids tagging along with Mom and Dad or a grandparent,” said Robert Elliston, Turfway’s president and CEO. “No other sport has been called ‘the Sport of Kings’ and ‘the Greatest Game,’ and we want to introduce a whole new generation to that.”

Corona Cantina will be open Wednesday through Sunday throughout the track’s fall meet. Located outdoors on the apron near the finish line, the cantina will pour Mexico’s best-selling beer exclusively and feature giveaways, games, and prizes. Turfway Park staff will be available to help novice race-goers learn the ins and outs of handicapping.

Friday-night Corona Cantina patrons can put themselves in the running for a $5,000 win bet voucher. Fridays at the cantina also will feature live music, and twice during the meet—Kentucky Cup Day on September 13 and October 2, the last day of the meet—Cincinnati’s Bacchanal Steel Drum Band will add a little Caribbean spice. Popular local DJ Eddie Fingers of WEBN will be on hand from 5 to 7 p.m. each Friday during the meet.

Friday nights on the apron also will feature $1 Dogs and Drafts, hot dogs, Budweiser and Bud light for a dollar each, sponsored by Budweiser.

Fans catching the races on Sundays can keep up with pro football at the same time with NFL Sunday Ticket on screens in the Homestretch Bar, sponsored by United Tote. Sunday Ticket is the NFL’s presentation of all pro games from across the country.

First post is 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and 1:10 p.m. on weekends. Admission and parking are free throughout the fall meet, including the Kentucky Cup Day of Champions.
