FLORENCE, KY . . . January 7, 2004 . . . Turfway Park saw another record fall Wednesday when Cindy’s Hobby, a seven-year-old mare, set a new track record for five furlongs on dirt. Carrying 122 pounds, she stopped the clock at :56.93.
The previous record had been :56.98, set February 23, 2002, by Salutee, who carried 115 pounds.
Cindy’s Hobby is by Tejano out of Santa Cruz, by Carson City. She was bred by Double D Farm Corporation in Kentucky.
The record-setting win came in the third race, a $5,000 claiming event for fillies and mares four years old and older. Rafael Bejarano had the mount for trainer Maria Pinzon. Cindy’s Hobby is owned by Ron Grout and Nelson Rennekamp.
Sent off at 8-5, Cindy’s Hobby set fractions of :22.27 and :45.12 on her way to a 6-1/2 length victory. Bejarano kept her just off the pace inside and had the lead for good at the 3/8 call.
